Nice post, Reshmi.

we need more such posts to strike a balance between mother tongue and national language.

For now, the equation is quite simple;

Regional language is a mix of English + any local language

National language is a mix of Hindi + local language for the particular state + English

Global language is English undisputed.

P.S. The above equation is only applicable to India and Indians. Rest of the world knows very well how to keep their local and national languages comfortable away from English, which they use as a global language.

Thanx so much Aneez. It’s after ages I am seeing ur comment on my post, and I am really happy :D)!

Your observation is so true that other countries religiously keep their local and national languages intact, though the use of English as the global language is universally accepted. In fact, English being a language which is relatively easy to decipher and relate to, it’s good that it has emerged as the global language. But that should never lead to a denial of our own mother tongue. Atleast, I feel that way.

Hmmmmmm, I would nuance your observations.

ALL european languages, (french, german etc.) use lots of anglicisms. In France they have ”Power breakfast, shopping, parking, cool, flea-market, busy, rush, overbooked, wait-and-see, first lady” and hundreds (if not thousands) of others.

I personally think that it’s not english that is the problem, it’s people’s pride in their own language. Also, in France, anglicisms are seen as being ”cool” and ”modern” by those who use them.

It’s true though that it’s not like in India, where people speak english as an entire language for various reasons that you both describe very well....

Hi Mr Nachiket, thank you for visiting and leaving your comment on my article. But I don’t understand why you are so protective about Marathi language, and specially want to support the hooliganism of one of our political leaders! I have read ur previous article where you have tried to highlight this issue, but though whatever has been stated about the infiltration of the Biharis and their wayward and rough behaviour holds partly true, I don’t agree that they are trying to convert Mumbai into another Bihar.

Secondly, regarding my article, I have never stated that the politicians who try to raise a storm regarding the protection of mother tongue, have any restrictions regarding studying any other language. It is just the hypocrisy that their own children are all educated in good International schools, but they want others to converse and forcibly learn the regional language that completely puts me off. That is what I have tried to point out. The quetion of any restriction does not arise at all.

Thirdly, I have given the example of Bangalore which is very cosmopolitan in its outlook. Here, all languages are equally spoken, in fact most of the college goers speak in a unique ”Kanglish- which is a humorous mix of Kannada and English, sprinkled with little bits of Hindi”. It is not because they cannot speak in Hindi or their own mother tongue for that matter. I have never tried to say anything regarding speaking or communicating in Hindi. It applies for Tamil, Telegu, Malayali, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi...any regional language for that matter. Hope you have understood.

Hi reshmi gr8! post. Comuunication in vernacular/regional language is a great thing, but it is also good that in a country like India, where ther are so many multiple languages, English works as a great common denominator. Life for me in Bangalore has certainly been more comfortable/ and easier to adjust ever since i moved from Kolkata, because most people ( including local vendors, cab-wallahs, etc) can converse in the English language( perhaps this is also one of the reasons why this is such a preferred destination for a lot of people from within and outside the country). While it is important to know/appreciate one’s local langauge we should not be hung-up on it...esp nowdays in the era of globalization.

I cannot agree with this, sorry. India is a country of many languages, as you say, but I would be very careful about choosing a ”common denominator”. ”Common denominator” would mean, in the long run, the end of Indian languages.

I think english should be used only as a last resort............

Thanks Nishi. I totally agree with what you have said, but what I felt was in recent times we have developed a tendency to give prime importance to English in every field...even where it is not required. It is indispensible now in every sphere of our life I agree...but I have seen parents who are openly proud that their children can’t even speak in their mother tongue, and the entire converstation goes on in English! True, its their own prerogative, but sometimes it reflects on our hankering for a foreign language...what do you say?

Hello Reshmi,

It’s difficult to know exactly what Arvind’s trying to do.

I do know that he has an aversion to all things anglo-saxon and that’s his right, but he really has it in for the anglo-saxon press, media, culture, customs spiritual beliefs etcetera.

He is referring here to an article he wrote, called something like ”Another F***** article” in which he expresses his extreme distaste for swearing. It just seems a shame he had to use an english swear word in the title though LOL! Maybe he thought it would grab people’s attention more, I don’t know.

He has also expressed his intention to write a long article about, if I’m not wrong, porn. (Indian porn in particular i think he said). Why? I don’t know.

That’s all I can tell you, I’m afraid. He just doesn’t like Westerners.

As I say, that’s his right, but it does seem a shame that he has to say so in comments on articles that are not about that particular subject....
Many thanks for your knee and jerk reaction on my comment. You seem to rely more on premeditated orientations than relying on application of mind in league with sentiments inherent in the comment. But first let me make it very clear to U that I have intercepted both “Viewpoint” and “Essence” inherent in your article. On the contrary, you have deviated away from the viewpoint reflected in the comment. I stand by each and every word written in the comment and absolutely sure that the views expressed in the comment not only deals with your issue in an altogether different perspective but also add new dimensions to what you have stated. It appears that you chose to be guided by preset beliefs. It’s also very clear that either you don’t know Hindi or you deliberately tend to ignore what’s being stated in the comment. I once again state that comment is intrinsically linked with views echoed in your article. I am convinced about validity of views echoed in the said comment not because I have stated it but because they fit in very well amid the views expressed in the article.
P.S.: Don’t ask for its English translation. I hate translations for two reasons .One you have stated in your article : “ They should at least know how to read their own language, so that they can savor the richness of our cultural heritage and the opulence of our regional Literature, which can never be fully appreciated in a translated or transcription form. What do you feel?” .Secondly, I don’t expect an Indian to ask for translated version of Hindi! Such a demand at this moment is surely not only going to make U butt of ridicule but also make mockery of your “viewpoint “and “essence” inherent in the article!!
And yes, if you are not interested in reading and understanding the comment then just spare me from going through your ridiculous interpretation. It’s giving congenial idiot like Aneez to display the evil lurking within his bosom. It’s also making an aged “linguistic” scholar like Michael C to enter in “comedy of interpretations” and “ comedy of fatal blunders “ both .I respect elders but can’t see likes of Michael C (stoop so low only to indulge in cheap gestures that only prove that he is devoid of grace and understanding which is mark of the elders. You are extremely frustrated Michael .A little rest will let you be in tune with your rationality, at present, lost in the wilderness.

Pathetic. Ridiculous. Childish.

Ok. Are you happy now?

Fine.

Time for you to go to bed young man....

Well, I never knew you believe in breaking promises. Once again reminding you that it’s better for both of us to stop interacting online. Or else, you will both privately and publicly bombard my mail box with “pieces of shit ” , being chased by hallucinations of all sorts, imagining things which do not exist at all. After reading your present comments, I am now certain that either you are devoid of analytical power or anger seems to have (blown out the lamp of your mind. I am compelled to send this comment only to let U know that you have turned into a laughing stock the way you have chosen to react in a mindless manner. I will just let you know why I say so without making so-called personal remark, without bringing forth any additional remark. What you have stated in your comments are enough to turn both you and Aneez into caricatures.
I am really happy that the “(damned and satanic anglo-saxon) internet allows this kind of insecure peurility to be immortalised for all to see).” Yes, I really wish everybody should know that who U really are and what you people are really up to? Ironically, you have by your side a congenial idiot like Aneez to dance to your tunes, making the fiasco utterly hilarious from one angle. However, having a look at the whole thing from close angle reveals ugly side of yours without much effort on my part.
Hello Reshmi,

It’s difficult to know exactly what Arvind’s trying to do.

Me: (I have only conveyed what was fit and proper in the light of issue raised in Reshmi’s article.)

He is referring here to an article he wrote, called something like ”Another F***** article” in which he expresses his extreme distaste for swearing. It just seems a shame he had to use an english swear word in the title though LOL! Maybe he thought it would grab people’s attention more, I don’t know.
Me: (Here you are caught red-handed Michael!!! And it reduces into pieces not only all what you have stated but what Mr. Aneez has chosen to state via his display of word-power! No I am not referring to the article mentioned by you. This comment is directly and intimately related with the subject matter of Reshmi’s article, albeit stated in Hindi. I am really ashamed to state that you came to say so many things without bothering to know what I am really stating. Should I say that you have victim of your suppressed desire to paint me in wrong colours by hook or cook and now you are reduced to a person eager to hurl hate-filled messages on slightest pretexts? Tell me what should I assume? I thought that the contentious issues between us have become a thing of past but you cannot prevent yourself from barking like a mad dog.

He has also expressed his intention to write a long article about, if I’m not wrong, porn. (Indian porn in particular i think he said). Why? I don’t know.
Once again you seem to be not in your senses. Caught red-handed again. Let me tell U something which has been erased from your memory. Last time we had interacted on Sreelata’s post that dealt with Yuvraj’s back-pain . There I have stated to you that prejudices governing English sporting media tend to dominate Western media as well. I told you that I will be writing another long article highlighting prejudices governing Western media while reporting India related stories. And that’s something so commonplace in eyes of all sensible readers that I do not wish to write it soon. That’s what I stated and you know very well. So what makes U say “I’m not wrong, porn. (Indian porn in particular i think he said).” Check facts Michael if age has taken its toll on your memory!!!!

That’s all I can tell you, I’m afraid. He just doesn’t like Westerners.

ME: I love westerners but I don’t want Indians to turn into clones of western people .Is that clear to U?

As I say, that’s his right, but it does seem a shame that he has to say so in comments on articles that are not about that particular subject....
ME: Once again don’t talk like a madman. Especially, if you have not bothered to decipher and understand what anyone has come to state? Read my latest comment attributed to Reshmi. I have made it very clear there that each and every word in the comment relates with the issue highlighted in Reshmi’s article. The blunder you committed was that you chose to comment without reading a single word. You should have thought twice on commenting on piece that was beyond your realm of comprehension, being written in Hindi .Okay you are a linguistic scholar and that allows you to comment about language related stories but does that mean commenting on pieces which you have not read at all forget about understanding . Had U read and understood you would have easily intercepted that it was at par with issues raised. I didn’t write in English because I found fit and proper to say in mother tongue to honour “viewpoint” and “essence “of the said article.

Anyway, had U reacted in a sensible way then it would not have allowed others to intercept crooked and corrupt side of dirty chaps like Aneez once again. It’s time for him to carve a word for himsef which encircles his evil traits well. Like a parasite he survives on fallacious interpretation of others. And that’s why I have no hesitation in hailing him as a congenial idiot.
firstly, let me thank you for spending so much time and taking so much pains in trying to make me understand that I have deviated from my topic...but pray tell me brother, you have not stated anything about where I have gone awry; instead you seemed to be hopping mad about Michael’s and Aneez’s comments!! If you are so sure of your standpoint what is the need to react so strongly? I may not be an eloquent scholar in Hindi like you, but I do understand, write and read Hindi Literature, so just expressing one’s thoughts in mellifluous and ornate language does not help in showing your expertise over the language, nor does it show that others don’t know or understand Hindi at all! I have asked one simple question that what is the link between obscenity and parading naked that you have mentioned in your comment got to do with my article? If you wanted to show that we are just aping whatever the West is doing, I am sorry buddy...my point was never that. To each his or her own.

I have never asked you to translate your comment in English! But, sadly whatever you have typed the alphabets are in English...you should have taken little more pain and used the Hindi script...the authenticity as you have stated would have been even more :P)!

Last but not the least...inspite of your laudable command over the English language...I have to say that it is ”Knee jerking” reaction and not ”knee and jerk” reaction!! Just chill brother...don’t get so hyper :D

@ Michael-Only a clarification

Stop kidding yourself, Michael. If you are really interested in stating the facts then do it. Why are you entering in concoction of facts in name of setting the record straight? But before I do that let me appeal again even at the risk of it being taken as déjà vu that please don’t try to interpret statements if you just don’t know how to interpret them. You are excellent in coining new phrases and also a refined writer but you are a horrible interpreter. I have no hesitation in stating that you are being chased by hallucinations of all sorts –seeing snake in rope!! I am totally in dark why are U imagining such wild things when by no stretch of imagination one can ever arrive at such vague conclusions.
I don’t know why are U imagining weird things by taking in account the strange and twisted version of the comment when U know very well that in what context I made those comments. It’s proving to be a real memory tickler but I remember well that at that moment I was telling Shahwar K. that I don’t like the habit of hurling abuses and I have really never given way to temptation of using them. Since by that time, call it coincidence, I had just finished writing article encircling the habit of people to hurl abuses on minor pretexts I decided to unveil the fact to Shahwar K. That’s all .And U and other readers, who have read and commented on that article, know very well that the said article did appear with the same appeal to the ladies that they should read it at their own peril as it has shocking references!!!Even then U said so many absurd things in a private mail and now when the whole thing has become a matter of past you still cannot resist yourself from are making a mountain out of a mole hill . I don’t know what’s the problem with U?
Well, let me state the record straight for U.I am presenting an excerpt from that comment where this statement originally appeared (In article named “My child was sodomized”).
“Anyway , I like to inform you that I am planning to post a XXX rated article related with ” Indian Gaalis ”.Though this article could hurt the sense and sensibilities of Indian women ,I would love to have perspective of bold and frank lady like U.”

It’s simply a case of over-reaction. Probably, you thought that I was stating the whole thing to create some sort of sensation. But, Michael that’s not always the case. That article not only appeared but you too came to post your comment there. Probably, you
are agitated over mentioning of “XXX rated” but I did not use it in the strict pornographic sense but only to pepper the whole information with a tinge of humour. It was only intended at revealing the fact that it has distasteful references. That’s all. And that’s why the article appeared with an appeal. You chose not only to over-react but also indulged in gross misrepresentation of facts. I was clueless about the real reasons as to what made you send that “ private shit” of yours but now your present comment makes it quite evident that you are also lord of scandalous assertions.
Michael, just really check the facts before giving shape to your perceptions in black in white besides making sure that you have really understood the context in which those facts appear. It will prevent U from turning into a laughing stock via your strange interpretations. The article has appeared and U too are there in form of your comment. But U are still awaiting its appearance….haha….

“But don’t ask me if it’s true. Ask Shahwar K.”

You are conveying the impression that that the whole thing was conveyed the way U sent your ”private shit” to me .No need for others to verify it from Shahwar. It’s there for everybody to see and interpret unlike that “private shit “of yours of which only I am aware of and not others .And the difference in approach says all. No need to state that you have invented the fact .And I am not interested in knowing WHY?

@ Reshmi

Thanks for taking note of my observations. Sorry!! I didn’t wish to say anything related with Aneez and Michael in a comment addressed to U. However, I had to do that to make U remain in tune with “essence” and “viewpoint” reflected in your article!!! As far as other long comments, which are apparently not in league with views expressed in your comments, had become need of the hour to counteract baseless things based on absurd assumptions and perceptions. You cannot remain a mute spectator, never mind if in the process if you have to deviate from the standard mode of conversation. I like to deal issue on merit and that has always been the case whenever I have participated in debates. Here too, I wished to remain context-oriented but unfortunately some deviation acted as spoilsport. Lastly, I reacted strongly not because I am unsure about the validity of my views but because many things have been said that have no relation with the context .I hope U get my point !
Now let me in brief highlight the contradictions inherent in your observations. There are some glaring contradictions both in your article as well as in your observations .In fact, the style and approach embraced by you in your comment when viewed in totality make it very clear that you have not taken note of “viewpoint” and “essence” associated with my comment. I don’t need to categorically state those deviations in words. Even a superficial analysis of your remarks is going to reveal that deviation.
1.	“ I may not be an eloquent scholar in Hindi like you, but I do understand, write and read Hindi Literature “
——I am also no Hindi scholar but an ordinary citizen who loves Hindi –someone who is really interested in growth of Hindi. You say that you “understand, write and read Hindi Literature “then what made you say that “I am flabbergasted at Arvind’s reaction...this is the problem with some people, they don’t understand the view point and the essence, and just get into a tirade of words.” Why were U flabbergasted? If you really understood what I have stated then what was the point in calling it a tirade of words? It is not tirade of words but an attempt to fill in the blanks!!! If you have not deciphered it, then please take the help of someone who knows Hindi better than U and who can really help U in establishing its link with your article!!!

2.” so just expressing one’s thoughts in mellifluous and ornate language does not help in showing your expertise over the language, nor does it shows that others don’t know or understand Hindi at all! “
——–How did you arrive at this conclusion? Okay. Let me remind me you one of the viewpoints expressed in article –To love English but at the same time remain in touch with one’s mother tongue. Same thing has been done here. Strangely, for the reason best known to you, it has become an attempt to highlight one’s expertise besides an attempt to highlight the ignorance of others. Hats off to your flawed analysis! You have brutally murdered essence of your article here. Think over it.

3.	It’s utterly ridiculous and I fail to understand what has obscenity and roaming about naked got to do with this?? Any link remotely possible :P))? Awaiting your reply...:D) …………. I have asked one simple question that what is the link between obscenity and parading naked that you have mentioned in your comment got to do with my article? If you wanted to show that we are just aping whatever the West is doing, I am sorry buddy...my point was never that.

-	——————–You are at your wits end in deciphering a link. Any link remotely possible? And you say that “understand, write and read Hindi Literature “. Please read it as many times as you can. And I am sure a time will come when you will establish the link. I can just say that the comment is absolutely at par with sentiments expressed in your article. Yes, from one angle it does curse the aping syndrome but it’s not about aping alone. It’s about effect of aping over our sense and sensibilities. Mindless aping has not only created problems in other realms but it has also affected our command over our mother tongue. Your whole article is a simple narration of what’s happening in present India, with a conclusion that “love both English and your mother tongue”.I appreciate your effort but you shrewdly avoided “why it’s happening ”.The only plausible explanation offered by you is that in modern world English is imperative to be in tune with demands of global world. True, but such a simplistic explanation is not going to hide the real reasons of developing such dangerous liaison with English. And what about the other implications of striking a bonhomie with English? I am not going to tackle these crucial aspects because you have not dealt with them. However, I have tried to focus on “why “aspect of your article in my comment via “roaming naked” and “obscenity” references. Yes, I agree that your article is a very simple take on a very sensitive issue. However, in my eyes, the complexities involved in it do not allow me to accept the whole thing in such a simple way.

4. I have never asked you to translate your comment in English! But, sadly whatever you have typed the alphabets are in English...you should have taken little more pain and used the Hindi script...the authenticity as you have stated would have been even more :P)!
—-You never asked but your reaction (flabbergasted) made me think that U need a translation! Thankfully, you have made it clear that you know Hindi. About Hindi script. No, it’s not very easy thing to write Hindi script with help of computer. I don’t know about others but that’s the case with me. Interestingly, I have written an article on Instablogs in Hindi script that deals with issue of language. I am giving U the link. Have a look at it. Had it been so easy, I would have written it in Hindi script. Even the font used in the said article is not perfect which has led to so many errors in construction of Hindi words— http://indowaves.instablogs.com/entry/resurrecting-glory-of-hindi-an-article-in-hindi/

5. Last but not the least...inspite of your laudable command over the English language...I have to say that it is ”Knee jerking” reaction and not ”knee and jerk” reaction!! Just chill brother...don’t get so hyper :D
–I regret the said error.Yes,it’s time to avoid knee-jerk reactions !! After typing long responses, I am not left in a position to re-read and re-edit the comments. I do send erratum after I come to notice them but even that too is not an easy affair. The interesting thing about Instablogs is that it does not give you the luxury to edit your comments! That’s creating lot of problem for me.

@ Reshmi-APOLOGY

I do not know whether U have really understood my comments or not but please do understand that I did not intend to hurt you via those Hindi Muhavaras. I tender my APOLOGY for something that was purely unintentional.
I also don’t know what Michael, Aneez , Shahwar ,Reshmi and others think of me when they are not interacting with me online, but I always respect and admire them at their back during private conversations with friends whenever they make their appearance in my thoughts. I hold you people in high esteem both as a reader and contributor. But it appears to be greater truth that we belong to different plane of thoughts and that there is always going to be difference of opinion on sensitive issues. So even if we appear to be poles apart on certain matters at a public forum, let not our differences get converted into personal hatred for each other.

Life is short and , therefore, let’s not nurture personal animosity. I don’t know whether U people have experiences of happenings inside the court but I do have as a lawyer. We miss no opportunity in quashing the arguments of each other in all possible ways but once we come out of the premises of court we are great friends again. It’s time to have the same spirit on Instablogs as well.

Let’s keep our differences intact but let not downsize stature of others via cheap remarks. Every dog has its day .We might emerge as winner because of greater command of language and greater understanding of the issue at hand but nobody can retain such winning abilities forever. Today’s winner can in future emerge as loser in some other debate. It’s all transitional and insignificant in the drama called life .So instead of recognizing each other purely as winners/losers in debates, let’s honour each others persona even as we come to intercept our great differences.
Before I conclude, I must say Reshmi that I am really disappointed the way you chose to express your views both in the article and comments. I expect U to read and reflect more before penning article on such a sensitive issue. And that’s also the case with your comments. First you accuse of me not taking note of your “viewpoint” and “essence” apart from being bothered about my “hopping mad about Michael’s and Aneez’s comments” when U were very well aware of the cheap considerations roped in by them in such a sensitive issue. Right from the beginning you were “flabbergasted” and desperate to know about the “ link between obscenity and parading naked that you have mentioned in your comment got to do with my article?” even as you came to declare that “I do understand, write and read Hindi Literature ”.I accepted your version and came to offer my clarification .

In other words, I tried to be at par with you view that let me be more subject oriented instead of spending my time on deciphering some of the vague comments. But look at your response : “ honestly I don’t have the patience to again go through your comment and give clarifications regarding the same, because I write an article not to prove any point, but just because I love to write.” and “I will try to use a Hindi Muhavra for this ” Jale pe namak chhirak na :P) “.So first U ask me to say something on the issue and virtually make an appeal to explain certain things in my comment but when explanation is offered you think that “honestly I don’t have the patience to again go through your comment and give clarifications regarding the same”. Okay , you are not interested in going through the explanation most sought after by you but you seem to be displeased with the fact that why am I stating my own viewpoint –“just writing thesis to prove one’s point essentially does not convey anything”.

After all, if you are so interested in projecting your “ESSENCE” and “VIEWPOINT” then do give space to others to express their “Viewpoints” along with the ability to see it in proper light with a right mindset. More so when one is making all efforts to remain subject-oriented amid host of unwanted comments .It really hurts that when someone is giving a clarification on your demand you are more interested in “Jale pe namak chhirak na :P” with no intention of taking note of other’s point of view by stating that “I write an article not to prove any point”. So if you are not interested in taking note of someone’s point of view then why are you so bothered about your “viewpoint and essence”?

Lastly, thesis is a great word. Don’t make mockery of it. I have not done a thesis but I know that to write a thesis is very great affair and it has a potential to change the world in a big way once brought in application. You should have felt happy that someone was really eager to critically analyze your views but sadly you found fit and proper to engage in “ Jale pe namak chhirak na :P”. That’s not the way to deal with a sensitive issue when you are the originator of the debate.

Once gain I tender my APOLOGY to you .I did not intend to hurt your feelings. Let me not hesitate in accepting that I respect Michael, Aneez, Shahwar and others a lot. Though I agree that it’s very difficult for us to kill the differences in our perceptions, I think that’s not a reason to breed personal animosity in our hearts for each other . If we can never be great friends, let’s not turn into great enemies.

Yours,
Arvind K.Pandey

Fine, let’s revive the thing.

Reshmi, I agree that translation kills the charm of any language, but why do you feel that transcription will kill the charm out of a regional language or mother tongue?

I’ve seen many people using it for various purposes. Though a majority of them use it for noble purposes, there are a few who use transcripted version to show their supremacy (read: to assert their points). I mean, I know they are insulting their mother tongue, but just for these fools, why should we blame the ones with pure intentions??

Why???
