Wireless notebook produced in India for just £7: incredible but true!
This is one news which left me with a feel good, “joie de vivre” kind of sensation for a long time even after I read about it. Renowned scientists from Bangalore and Madras have developed the bargain basement computers, whose unique low power design allows them to be charged with just 2 watts of power input. This makes them ideal for solar or dynamo powered application which will be a boon for remote areas in India where supply is a problem. This is however, not the USP of this marvelous product. This Wi-Fi capable notebook is available at an unbelievable price tag of £7, which is something incredible even in this time of financial crunch and economic slowdown!

There aren’t a lot of details about the specifications other than the fact that they will offer wireless for internet access and 2GB of memory, but the rock bottom price tag is indeed very inviting. In a country like India this will definitely revolutionize the entire concept of E-learning, which is still in a very nascent stage. In fact, ministers plan to connect 20,000 colleges through this path breaking initiative, and a prototype will be unveiled this week that cost around £14 approx. When the machine goes into full production it will be available at half the price.

However, many people are skeptical about the whole project, and consider this to be a publicity stunt just to attract the voters. Whatever the real reason maybe, it is indeed a wonderful initiative which will go a long way in educating the people of India, especially in remote, rural and inaccessible places. Let us all keep our fingers crossed and fervently pray that this project sees the light of the day, and does not get shelved like innumerous previous schemes and proposals which the government announces when the election approaches, and conveniently forgets about them after the results are declared!

Reshmi, we must welcome these initiatives(if really true). I like that you wrote on education. Because mission in journalism is being lost somewhere.

Its really good initiative by you.

Thank you Abhishek. Even I feel that this is a very good initiative, but the funny part is not many know about this news. It has not been highlighted in any of the National dailies like TOI or Deccan Herald or Hindustan Times etc. We are more busy with Dhoni’s recent hair cut or Shamita Shetty’s b’day celebration. In fact, even Roger Federer breaking down after being defeated by Nadal gets front page coverage...but such news, which can really usher a big change in Indian educational scenario, do not get any importance. Its sad, but true.

Hello Reshmi,

Totally wrong title for this piece. We are still skeptical about the pricing. Maybe just an EMI for the netbook? Who knows, but definitely cannot be classified as ’incredible but true’, as there is no confirmation to it’s veracity. Not sure about the pricing scheme of the netbook but the ministers have caught our attention by their price scheming?

Hi Peter,

Thanks for dropping by and posting ur valuable feedback. I have clearly mentioned in the article that this is still in the proposal stage...but as far as the pricing is concerned its already agreed upon that this will be more or less the final price. At least the article where I read about this news said so. We are always skeptical about any good initiative taken by the government...but lets hope for the best and at least try to spread this positive vibe about education, instead of assuming that it’ll be an EMI for the net book and not its price.

I am just fed up with the scepticism with which everybody views with the ingenuity and originality of our brilliant Indians. I really feel that this is because the west feel threatened with the Indian genius and originality.

Rather than encouraging this absolutely brilliant venture, all one hears is the really negative comments from the western press. Well, Well done Vellore and IIT Madras and all that helped in making this impossible venture possible.

hello Hitesh,

Thanks so much for dropping by and posting your comment. I agree with you, that any good initiative taken by the Indians are viewed with an X-rayed eye by the Indians themselves, and we are more critical of any positive initiative, instead of going all out to support it. For your information, the Western media and websites have all praised this venture and not cricized it. In fact, they are astounded by this incredible pricing, and are ready to give kudos to the Indian scientists if this product is launched in the market. It is apathy of the Indian media, which has not highlighted this scheme, and the scepticism of the Indian people which comes more to the forefront.
Anyways, let us at least morally support such a wonderful initiative and hope that it becomes a reality in the near future.
