Welcome to new gadget savvy India- 14 year old kills classmate's sister to get ipod

Today morning as I was leafing through the newspaper I found first four pages about Michael Phelps’s new girlfriend, his likes and dislikes along with eloquent paens in Rajiv Gandhi’s name. Towards the bottom of the fifth or sixth page, relegated to one corner, is a 4 liner regarding a child in West Bengal killing his classmate’s sister to acquire an ipod. No, this news is not sensational enough to make it to the front page headlines. We are more interested in Jade Goody leaving Big Boss and Shilpa Shetty raking in millions for the new TV reality show. I am really scared now. Scared because my son is eight and half. Scared because he is not a gadget freak, but like most kids of his age nowadays, he is well aware of Ipods and computers. He loves to download songs on my Ipod, and occasionally gives me intelligent inputs on the latest trends. As a mother, sometimes I feel secretly proud of my son’s feat. But now I have a nagging fear...how will I know when this might turn into an obsessive compulsive disorder? Are we wrong in trying to give the best possible exposure to our kids regarding the latest gizmos and gadgets to hit the market?

The child, who has murdered I read, was calm and composed throughout his interrogation at the police station. He had previously been caught many times by neighbours for stealing cell phones, but nobody had paid heed to this. And to top it all, this has happened not in any metro, but a so called sleepy town in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Where are we heading then? I know people will say I am over reacting. This is only a stray incident, unlikely to happen again. But, I am appalled at the way the child has reacted. What do you call this...apocalyptic boon of technology?

Yes we have become gossip loving freaks as far as the news is concerned. I’m glad you’ve brought this to everyones attention. I wouldn’t call you paranoid and i wont consider this incident isolated but i will say its more about how you raise your children rather than blame it on ipods. The child could have just as easily killed another child for clothes, marbles or something equally silly. Teaching your kid to work for his/her goals instead of resorting to criminal activities is imperitive. Minor incidents like letting stealing go unpunished only reinforces this kind of behaviour. I blame shooter not the gun.

Thanks Nithya for giving your views. I agree with you that it depends on us parents as to how we raise our children, but in today’s world the exposure I feel is too high. You have to tread very cautiously, and as you have rightly pointed out nothing should be ignored thinking that he or she is just a kid, and its only juvenile delinquency.

I totally agree with both of you here...

I think we as a society need to change our value system a bit if we want to raise our kids right...

Growing up, I was told that I should compare myself to other kids my age and that every family and individual has their own ways and means...

But these days I see parents themselves comparing their kids to others... No wonder they want to be like others and have what they have...

This incident may be too shocking but really not totally unexpected!!

Yes, Reshmi, this is a disturbing news. I strongly feel it is due to bad parenting. Kids watch too much violence on TV and are becoming gadget freaks- when they should be kicking football and picking up some new creative hobbies. Empty mind in physically inactive body is a complete devil’s workshop.

Thank you Madhuri for sharing your thoughts. To tell you the truth, I honestly don’t know whom should we blame, the hapless parents who have not bothered to check the kids development, our system, or the present generation becoming couch poatatoes enjoying mindless violence programmes on the net and television. Thanx for visiting.

It is a very disturbing news. This is just a glaring example of the diminishing family values and parental care. Our lives have become busier and hectic, forcing parents to spend very less time with their kids. Kids dont get enough attention, care and love. I wont blame the kid, rather place the blame on kid’s parents.

of course! we should blame on Kid’s parents....this is another example by the carelessness parents...
and.... again...I would like to say >>>>Modernization gradually manipulate into Murder-Organization

i read this story in the times of india this morning and it made my morning very gloomy today.... it really stirred me up especially by the teenager's calm behaviour during his act where he smashed the face of the child with a stone when he found that she wasn't dead and hid the body behind the boulders.

You children cannot be blamed for such acts. I can say that the kid who killed the little girl was a victim of the system where material belongings are flouted to either taunt or show off as it appears in this case. What does the kid know about the implications of a murder. His focus was on the gizmo only.

Shocking.but this is the fault of the civilization we have developed.Materialism and capitalism will take their toll! now that ’might is right’ and ’money is happiness’ are acceptable concepts; ’killing to possess’ is shocking only in children;and maybe adults too- but not amongst nations! but what is shocking today will also soon become acceptable.
Still Reshmi;thanks for having the heart and the decency to bring our plight to our notice.

Thank you Mr Hassan for reading this post. It is indeed shocking the way the child has not only killed the little girl, but after that also had no qualms about it. I don’t agree to the fact that he was not aware what a murder means, he is a teen ager, not a small boy of 3-4 years. Neither do I blame the parents squarely for the entire unfortunate episode, because I believe all parents try to instill good values and morality in their wards. But as you have rightly said what is shocking today will soon become acceptable. Thanx for your sensitive and humane outlook.

This is indeed a disturbing trend. Precious lives virtually going for a song! Parents should check it before it is too late.

Such incidences however shocking will always happen in India or wherever there is too much emphasis on material possession. Parents and guardians must teach their children that the world does not begin or end with such things.

Thank you everybody who has dropped by and left their valuable inputs and comments on my write up. I wanted to personally respond to each one of you, but am really feeling overwhelmed at the response. If an article can generate so much reaction, I can definitely say everything is not lost. Thanx once again.
