Infant mortality rate higher in boys than girls: a startling revelation
Truth is surely stranger than fiction. Well, at least sometimes. This thought immediately crossed my mind when I read about this research in the US, which has found that the mortality rate of infant boys is much higher than the girls. The study was made taking mortality data from 15 countries, namely 11 from Europe, along with United States, Japan, Canada and Australia, which clearly showed that the gap was an alarming 30% in the 70’s. This has been bridged to a certain extent and has come down to 20%, but that is more due to an overall drop in the infant mortality rates.

Boys are 60% more likely than girls to be born prematurely and to have impediments tied to pre-term birth such as neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, a condition that makes it difficult for a baby to breathe, according to the study. This syndrome can occur in infants whose lungs have not yet been fully developed. Infant boys also face a higher risk of birth injury and mortality due to their larger body and head size. This is touted as the primary cause of death in boys due to complications tied to childbirth and premature delivery.

Although this is a scientific research and has nothing to do with female feticide, I really wonder how far will this hold true for countries like India, Africa…or any developing nation for that matter. We are always saying “save the girl child”….should we rephrase it and say “save the child” instead? Point to ponder indeed!

Various risks are the reasons for high mortality rates for babies. The mother in her first three months of conception should be careful in her diet and activities. Her health is crucial for the survival of her baby.

As she nears giving birth, she should always consult her doctor about the status of her pregnancy. With extra care and support of the family, mortality in babies (boys or girls) is reduced.

A very startling revelation indeed, in a country with lopsided sex ratio this one comes as quite a surprise. It makes me wonder that inspite of such statistics, it is females that are lagging behind in number, it only makes wonder how many illegal and uncounted feoticides are taking place so to produce such an imbalance inspite of males having more mortality rate.

No need to change the slogan. The developing countries have proved that even if girl child has more chance of surviving, they will succeed in killing her by not taking proper care. Otherwise why do we not find the same survey giving the same result in country like India?

Strange revelation indeed. Who would think
boys would suffer this more than the girls. I have my doubts however that this would hold true for developing countries like Africa and India, where boys are generally favoured over girls. Where patriarchal rule overrides all else, boys will definitely be favoured over the girls, especially since the family name needs to be carried.

Hi Vinod,

I have already pointed out that I have my doubts how far this holds true for developing countries...you have almost echoed my thoughts!

well i would say that the this can be reduced if the expecting mothers follow the medication with more dedication and with regular check up. As when any complications comes into the notice in the early stages, then it becomes comparatively easy to cure..
